About Me

My name is Doug Emch. I’m a practicing psychiatrist in Tennessee (and New Mexico).  I work with children, adolescents, and adults in private practice and community-based mental health clinics.

“First Do No Pharm” was originally coined by me in a pharmacology class in medical school, just word play at the time in reaction to the staggering amount of material in need of memorizing.  The phrase stuck and has since evolved to become a mantra for my professional development.

My psychiatric training was traditional in terms of medical school (Vanderbilt University), residency (University of Colorado) and fellowship (Vanderbilt University), though built on a foundation steeped in philosophy   After attending a conference on micronutrient remedies, I began to see the world through new eyes, as it were, and really reassess what I knew in terms of mental health, mental illness, and treatment.

When not seeing patients, I am playing with my kids, mountain biking, running, hiking, camping, reading, scouting out new music, and traveling to exotic lands, or at least dreaming about travel.
